Patrick Hyland trudged to the corner and slumped down onto his stool after the fourth round of his last bout, an eight-rounder in Lowell, Mass., against David Martinez. As Patterson was shouting instructions and trying to motivate him, Hyland turned his head to seek some advice from his father, Patrick "Paddy" Hyland Sr., the man who'd gotten him into boxing. Hyland Sr. worked his son's corner as an assistant trainer, and all it took was a nod or a facial expression for them to communicate during a bout.
